Photos: Protests grip India after Hathras crime, hasty cremation

Outrage has spilled onto the streets following the death of a 19-year old Dalit woman, whose body was found by her mother in the fields of Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district. The 19-year old succumbed to her injuries on September 29 while undergoing treatment at Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital. However, protests intensified across the country after the news spread that the victim was hastily cremated in the dead of the night by local policemen. The family members also alleged that the cremation was done in their absence and against their will. In a statement issued against the act, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Twitter that a speedy trial would be conducted to punish those guilty of the crime.
