The outgoing year of 2022 witnessed events which have had a significant impact globally. Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, triggering a full scale war which shows no sign of peace in the offing. Despite tough sanctions by the West, Putin remains defiant as his forces continue to fight the Ukrainians in the eastern European country. Putin's invasion has received support from China's Xi Jinping who secured a record third term as president of the Communist superpower. A belligerent China continues to flex its muscles in Taiwan and the Asia Pacific. While the world reels under the economic implications of Covid-19 and the Ukraine war, India's neighbour Sri Lanka witnessed massive anti-government protests over its economic crisis. Social media was painted with videos of protesters storming the Lankan president and prime minister's residence. India's closest neighbour Pakistan continues to reel under high inflation. The Islamic republic witnessed floods killing more than 1,500 people in September. While the United Kingdom mourned the demise of Queen Elizabeth II, it got Rishi Sunak as its first Indian-origin prime minister. Iranians launched country wide anti-hijab protests following death of Mahsa Amini. Here are the top global events which dominated 2022.
