A 14-month-old child was killed after being crushed by a car (Innova -SUV) in Wakad area on Saturday. The incident happened on Saturday morning at around 11:30 am, according to the police.
The child was identified as Khushi Suresh Chaudhuri, daughter of Suresh Chaudhuri, resident of a chawl near Datta temple in Wakad, the police said. Suresh Chaudhuri, who is the complainant in the case, works as a cook in a local restaurant, according to the police. The driver was identified as Arvind Kalate, who is the owner of the place where the Chaudhuri family lives.
The Chaudhuri family's house is located in front of the entrance of Kalate's house, according to the police and the child was playing in the area in front of the house. Kalate was taking his car out of his house when Khushi reached the service road in front of Kalate’s car, according to the police.
The Wakad police registered a case for causing death due to negligent driving. A case under Section 304(a) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at the Wakad police station. Assistant police inspector (API) SS Gulve of Wakad police station is investigating the case.
“He could not see her from the driver’s seat as she was small and the SUV’s big body was a hindrance in his line of sight. She was crushed under the front left tyre. The post mortem revealed that she died of multiple injuries,” API Gulve said. Kalate was not arrested in the case, he added.
Around 35 years old, Kalate owns a local hotel and was heading out when the deceased girl and her friend were playing in the area. The other child was not injured in the incident, according to the police.
