The city police have arrested a 47-year-old driver who allegedly blackmailed and cheated a 24-year-old woman from Kothrud on the pretext of presenting himself as a handsome hunk from Singapore. The man later turned out to be a driver who stayed in the girl’s neighbourhood and never met her during the one-and-a-half-year courtship.

According to the Kothrud police, the accused befriended her by sending her an email inviting her to participate in a Hong Kong musical festival to which she replied and sent all her personal details, including one of her recorded songs.

The accused then proposed marriage to her and even wired money into her account and took care of her expenses. Slowly, the relationship strengthened and the accused got a dominant position over the victim, the police said.

Later, the accused advised her to download an Android application on her mobile phone when it developed a technical snag. He hacked her phone on the pretext that he will repair it online. However, after hacking the phone, he started keeping a tab on the activities of the girl, gathered her personal details and started blackmailing her. He prepared a dossier of her private data and blackmailed her with the intention of causing mental harassment, the police said.

According to the police, he took some private pictures of the victim and forced her to change clothes after making her to video call him. During the online conversation, he never showed his face on the phone. The victim was traumatised by the behaviour of the accused.

The girl lodged a complaint with the Kothrud police and the accused was nabbed. The victim requested that she would see the accused from a distance and was shocked to see his face and how he trapped her into his game plan.

“The accused had taken her nude picture and blackmailed her with that picture. We have booked him under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The accused hails from Ahmednagar and we will unearth his involvement in the crime as the investigation progresses,” said Kothrud police station in charge Appasaheb Shewale.
