Lok Adalat awards Rs 72 lakh compensation to late Marathi actor Anand Abhyankar’s family

The National Lok Adalat at the district and sessions court in Shivajinagar, on Saturday, awarded a compensation of Rs 72 lakh to the family members of late Marathi actor Anand Abhyankar, who had died in a road accident on the Pune-Mumbai expressway in 2012. Abhyankar’s relatives had filed a case seeking compensation in 2014.
Abhyankar (48), actor Akshay Pendse (35) and his two-year-old son Pratyush Pendse died when a tempo hit their car on the Pune-Mumbai expressway on December 23, 2012. Pendse’s wife Deepti survived the accident and was admitted at Lokmanya hospital in Nigdi.
The tempo driver was arrested and a case was registered against him under Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 279 of Indian Penal Code.
Abhyankar’s mother Ashadevi, wife Anjali and children Sanika and Neeraj had filed a claim for Rs 1 crore as compensation before the Motor Accident Claim Tribunal (MACT) following the incident.
Advocate Sandeepak Phadke, the counsel for Abhyankar family, said, “The petition was filed on July 18, 2014, against the National Insurance Company. The hearing took place in the court of principal district and sessions judge SM Modak. Finally, the matter was settled in the Lok Adalat on Saturday where a compensation of Rs 72 lakh was granted.”
The Pendse family had filed a separate compensation claim application.
Abhyankar and Pendse were part of many popular television serials including Mala Sasoo Havi. Abhyankar had also starred in several Marathi films like Spandan, Vastav, Pappa Sanga Kunache, Matichya Chuli and Balgandharva and has also performed in the play Kurtyat Sada Tingalam. He has also acted in Hindi television serials like Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai, Pappu Can't Dance Saala and Taarak Mehta Ka Ulltah Chashmah. Pendse has acted in television serials and movies including Kai Dyayche Bola.
