Feud over an illegal paan kiosk led to a firing in the University chowk area of Chatuhshrungi on Saturday morning, in which a 39-year-old man was shot at by an unidentified assailant. The bullet grazed his head and the vicitm is reported to be out of danger.

Within hours of being shot at, the Pune police succeeded in arresting the assailant, who was booked for attempt to murder. He was identified as Shukracharya Madhale (35), and was arrested during a combing operation in Hinjewadi, under the Pimpri-Chinchwad police commissionerate.

The victim was identified as Sameer Yenpure (39), a resident of Mehendale Garage. He was rushed to Ratna memorial hospital on Senapati Bapat road, after which he was shifted to Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital in Erandwane.

According to the police, the firing resulted from a dispute over a paan kiosk.

Police said that while Sameer Yenpure has a flex-board business, his assailant, Madhale has an illlegal paan kiosk in Erandwane. Madhale suspected that Yenpure had complained to the Pune municipal corporation (PMC) and was responsible for the removal of his kiosk by the anti-encroachment squad.

He opened fire on him in revenge for complaining to the PMC, police said.

Police officials said that both the accused and victim belonged to the same area.

Shukracharya nursed immense hatred for Yenpure and decided to kill him. He tailed him and opened fire at him at around 11 am at University chowk on Saturday, police said.

A team of top police officials rushed to the spot and launched a joint operation to nab the accused. A naka bandi (road check point) was immediately undertaken and the assailant was arrested in Bavdhan, police said.
