Rajendra Manik Rathod, 32, and Dhondibhau Mahadu Jadhav, 25, were found in possession of four countrymade pistols and 10 live cartridges by a team of local crime branch officials led by police inspector Dayanand Gawade.

The police had received information that the two were coming to the area near Shri Hari Misal Hotel, a local eatery in Bazaar Maidan chowk of Wagholi on Wednesday evening, according to Gawade. “The two were allegedly trying to sell the weapons and ammunition in their possession,” Gawade said.

While Rathod is a resident of Wagholi, Haveli and hails from Beed district, Jadhav maintained a residence in Nighoj area of Ahmednagar, according to the rural police. Rathod is a suspect in an assault case in the jurisdiction of Shirur police station.

Based on the information received by the local crime branch team, the police set a trap to nab the two by posting themselves in the area in civil dress.

Rathod owns a sand business in Nighoj and is suspected to have connections with the sand mafia from around the area and Shirur, according to the police. In the light of the recent attack on a Tehsildar in Parner, the revenue department tightened the noose around the local sand mafias. This in turn prompted Rathod to move out of the area and start a hotel business in Wagholi, according to the information received by the local crime branch.

The Lonikand police under Pune rural police jurisdiction now has the custody of the two arrested men and will be investigating the case.
