Pune’s Tamhini Ghat second wettest place in India after Cherrapunji

India Meteorological Department (IMD) rainfall data has the Tamhini ghat in Pune as the second wettest place in India, after Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, as of July 31, 2019.
Between June 1 and July 31, Cherrapunji has recieved 5,143 mm of rain, followed by Tamhini ghat, with 4,230 mm.
Of the top 10 wettest cities in India, eight are in the Maharashtra, including Mahabaleshwar and Amboli.
The 4102 mm of rain received in Patharpunj, Maharashtra, makes it the third wettest in the country
Amagaon from Karnataka is fifth, with 3,920 mm of rain so far this monsoon season.
Mahabaleshwar and Amboli which fall in the Western ghats, have so far received 3,722 mm and 3,875 mm of rain, respectively.
“Heavy rain in and around Maharashtra is because of the low pressure formed over the Bay of Bengal, along with strong westerly winds, ” says OP Srieejith, scientist, IMD Pune.
Srieejith further adds that circulation over Gujarat at the mid-tropospheric level and presence of an offshore trough from Gujarat to Karnataka is adding to the heavy downpours in the state.
Matheran, also in Maharashtra, comes in 13th rank on the list, with rainfall of 3,548 mm.
According to IMD officials, the situation will remain the same for the next few days and if this trend continues, Maharashtra will emerge as the wettest state in the country with the maximum rainfall this monsoon.
