It was a double tragedy for a Nabha family after a fertiliser dealer was shot dead by an unidentified man at his shop on Wednesday night, and his mother too died after hearing the news a few hours later.

The assailant did not touch Rs 2 lakh kept in the drawer of the counter.

Monik Jindal, 42, owner of Pal Khaad Store, was in his shop in the new grain market, Nabha, when the man shot him from a point-blank range around 8.30pm, the police said, adding the motive of the crime remains unknown. Jindal’s mother, Padma Rani, died of shock after hearing the news of the killing a few hours later.

Labourers working nearby said they saw a man running towards the main gate of the market after they heard a gunshot, the police said. Eyewitnesses say a motorcyclist was waiting on the road with whom the accused fled.

The assailant did not touch Rs 2 lakh kept in the drawer of the counter.

The police are investigating and are looking at the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of nearby shops. There was a CCTV in victim’s shop too. The police sent the footage to the IT cell as it was password protected.
