With the new cabinet ministers taking oath at the swearing-in ceremony at the Raj Bhawan on Thursday, all important local government portfolios stayed with the holy city.
The post which was earlier with BJP minister Anil Joshi, has now been given to cabinet minister in the newly formed Congress government Navjot Singh Sidhu. Though once party mates in the BJP, both Sidhu and Joshi were close to each other but later after differences erupted, both parted ways.
With the local bodies ministry given to Navjot Singh Sidhu, who represents Amritsar East constituency, the hope for the city to see further development has also got a fillip.
Since Sidhu is not new to Amritsar. The former cricketer, who remained a member of parliament (MP) of the Amritsar parliamentary segment thrice, knows the city well.
After becoming the minister, Sidhu, who always criticised the SAD-BJP regime for failing to keep the city clean regularly, will get an opportunity to take command and work on giving the city the same.
When Sidhu was an MP, he accused the Badals of scuttling his pet projects such as CCTV cameras for the entire city, multi-purpose stadium, solid waste management plant, flyover on the 4S chowk and few others. Now being the minister of local government, he will have all the authority to make that happen.
The cricketer-turned-politician who had been vocal against the functioning of the previous government will eye to rope in more projects for the city.
Since the city saw a flurry of projects in the recent year, its maintenance and getting the best out of it will also be a challenge for the new local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu.
