Excise officials bust illicit liquor den

A special squad headed by assistant excise and taxation commissioner Shaleen Walia (AETC) raided the area in the wee hours and detected illegal production of illicit liquor. The team seized the brew and the manufactured liquor, but the people engaged in the trade managed to escape by jumping in the river. As many as 10 'bhattis' (breweries), five boilers and other apparatus was also seized.

The AETC revealed that the liquor recovered from the spot was of very inferior quality, which could prove fatal. He claimed that the entire stock was destroyed then and there.

He said the department would keep a strict vigil on the activities of illegal manufacturers to prevent distribution of illicit liquor during the panchayat elections.
