Filmmaker Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions is set to produce a biopic on the life of Kargil War hero Captain Vikram Batra. Some parts of it will be shot at Panjab University (PU), Sector 14, Chandigarh.
Captain Batra, who had graduated in BSc from DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, joined the varsity in 1995 to pursue MA in English. During the time, he stayed in Hostel Number 1.
On Wednesday, the production team visited the varsity to seek permission of the authorities concerned for shooting on campus. The team wants to shoot at the department of English, said a source.
The biopic was announced in May this year. Actor Sidharth Malhotra is supposedly playing the role of Captain Batra. The story is written by Sandeep Srivastva and the film will being directed by Vishnu Varadhan.
Captain Batra was an Indian Army officer, posthumously awarded with the Param Vir Chakra for his actions during the 1999 Kargil War in Kashmir between India and Pakistan. He had led one of the toughest operations in mountain warfare in Indian history.
On June 19, 1999, under the leadership of Captain Batra, the Indian Army had snatched Point 5140, a strategically important mountain peak in the Dras sector, right under the enemy’s nose. After the successful operation of Point 5140, Captain Batra volunteered for the next mission to recapture Point 4875. The point was 17,000 feet above the sea-level and 80 degree steep. Captain Batra had died in the war while rescuing an injured officer in an enemy counter-attack.
Earlier on July 7, PU had dedicated the state-of-the-art Shooting Range to Captain Batra.
