The Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) will confer cash awards to this year's first three Class-10 toppers from the state.
The board of directors along with PSEB chairperson Tejinder Dhaliwal in a meeting on Wednesday approved the decision to encourage students to get better results and raise the competition bar.
The board has given nod to give cash award of Rs 1 lakh to the topper in the overall merit list, Rs 75,000 to the runner-up and Rs 50,000 to the student secured the third position.
Tejinder Dhaliwal said there was a need to encourage to do better in the studies.
"We decided to honour the first three position holders with cash prizes from this year," she said, adding the results for Class 10 is tentatively scheduled to be released on May 30.
Dhaliwal said earlier the Punjab government had launched scheme ensuring scholarships to all poor meritorious students in government schools across the state.
"Last year, the state government had launched Dr Hargobind Khorana Post-Matriculation Scholarship Scheme in which the students getting 80 per cent and above marks in their matriculation exam got Rs 30,000 for Class 11 and Rs 30,000 for Class 12," she added.
As many as 3,300 meritorious students of government schools were honoured last year for scoring 80% and above marks in Class 10 board examinations.
