Former Congress minister Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, who passed away on August 4, was cremated with full state honours in his native village in Dhaliwal here on Thursday.
A five-time MLA from Kartarpur assembly segment of Jalandhar district, Jagjit Singh held a number of key portfolios in different Congress governments.
Chaudhary's elder son and former district zila parishad chief, Surinder Singh lit the pyre. Religious leaders, including Sant Nirmal Dass Jaure of Sadhu Sampardai, too, attended the last rites.
A gun salute was accorded in the presence of district administration and police heads. The entire family, including Chaudhary's brother and Jalandhar MP Santokh Chaudhary his nephew Punjab Youth Congress chief Vikramjit Chaudhary and others, was present at the cremation.
Leaders from all political parties, including Shiromani Akali Dal chief parliamentary secretaries, Pawan Tinu, Avinash Chander and KD Bhandari, ex-ministers Sarwan Singh Phillaur, Mahinder Singh Kaypee, Avtar Henry and Amarjit Singh Samra, Master Mohan Lal and MLAs , Sukhi Randhawa and Tript Bajwa, attended the event.
