In what appears to be a case of honour killing, a youth allegedly pushed his 19-year-old younger sister into the Bhakra canal after he caught her talking to her boyfriend over phone at Near Century Enclave of Patiala.
The body of the victim, Preeti, is yet to be recovered as police believe it might have been washed away due to strong water currents.
The police have registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Bahadur Singh (23) who confessed to have committed the crime.
Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Sourav Jindal said the police received a call from Preeti’s mother Sunaari Devi on Thursday morning that Bahadur had killed her daughter.
“A team immediately rushed to the spot for investigation. The family handed over the accused to the police,” the DSP said.
During interrogation, the accused said he got enraged after he found his sister talking to her boyfriend on phone around 12:30am, the police said.
“He took his sister to the canal side and warned her against talking to her boyfriend. She took it lightly and laughed at him. On this, he got infuriated and pushed her into the canal,” the DSP said.
“He returned home following the incident. The matter came to light when his mother inquired about her daughter’s whereabouts. He then his family that he had thrown Preeti into the canal,” the DSP said.
The victim’s mother claimed that Bahadur is a drug addict and often had a heated argument with his wife on Thursday night.
The police said a team of divers was deputed in the canal to search of the victim’s body.
