Shaheed Sukhdev Singh Thapar Inter-State Bus Stand, one of the busiest in the region, is all set to provide better security arrangements for its passengers.
The bus stand, which sees nearly one lakh passengers each day, will now have four new closed-circuit television cameras for increased surveillance and two LED screens to flash the arrival and departure of buses.
The decision, taken at a meeting conducted between a general meeting between the director state transport and Welspun Projects Limited, the company that manages operations and maintenance of the bus stand, last month, was approved on Tuesday by the company management. It was taken the wake of an increase in commuters at the bus stand seen in the recent years.
Surinder Singh Pannu, manager of operations and maintenance, Welspun Projects Limited, said,”We already have seven CCTV cameras and three LED screens at various points of the bus stand. With a sharp rise in the number of commuters in the bus stand in the recent years, the state transport director had instructed the company to improve the security arrangements on the premises.”
While the cameras will be installed in two weeks, putting up LED screens will take another month.
“There will be one security camera each at the A, B and C block of the inter-state bus stand and one at the local bus stand, “said Pannu.
The LED screens would have GPS (global positioning system) to track buses. The screen would display the arrival time of a bus as soon as it comes within an 8kms radius of the bus stand.
“Passengers will also be kept informed about the exact position of the bus,” said Batish Singh, a supervisor at the bus stand.
Shamsher Singh, a commuter said, welcomed the move.
“The screens installed at bus stand really help the passengers to know the exact location of the bus at a particular time. Given the rise in thefts and pickpocket incidents at the bus stand, increasing the number of security cameras on the premises is also appreciable.”
