Half a dozen persons, including a woman, absconding in an assault case and their aides attacked a police party that conducted a raid outside the Patti courts complex to arrest them in Tarn Taran on Tuesday evening.
Despite two cops getting injured in the scuffle that ensued, the raiding party succeeded in arresting one of the accused.
The six — Kiranbir Singh, Kuldeep Singh and Jasbir Singh of Kapurthala, Swaranjit Singh and Baljit Kaur of Hisar and Kulwinder Singh of Ambala – had been booked for an armed attack causing grievous injuries, in a case registered at the city police station. They were here to appear before a local court.
Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Gurbax Singh, who is the chief investigation officer in the assault case, said: “We got a tip-off that the six accused are about to leave the court after appearing in the case. We rushed there to nab them.”
On seeing the police, the accused, who had just left the complex, felt trapped and attacked the cops on the road.
“The accused entered into a scuffle with us, injuring ASI Sarabjit Singh and me,” said Gurbax Singh. The ASI said Kulwinder Singh also managed to snatch handcuffs from one of the cops and fled. The attackers also tore clothes of some of the cops. The police, however, managed to nab Jasbir Singh.
Police have registered another case of assault against the six accused and their seven unidentified accomplices.
