Addressing party workers here during a meeting to finalise preparations for the December 15 coronation rally of Amarinder, Lal Singh said by appointing him as the state Congress president, the party high command had laid the foundation for a Congress government in the 2017 assembly polls.

“By appointing Amarinder as state party chief, party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi have fulfilled the demand of party workers. He has been appointed after consulting all MLAs, district party presidents and party councillors in local bodies,” he said.

Virtually announcing Amarinder as the Congress’ chief ministerial candidate, Lal Singh said: “The state will prosper under his leadership. The present SAD-BJP government has pushed the state into debt trap and the law and order situation has gone from bad to worse.”

‘Capt appointment has Sukhbir worried’

He said Amarinder appointment as the state Congress chief has frustrated deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal which was being reflected from his statements and announcement of a parallel rally on December 15 at Patiala.

Replying to a question during a press conference, Lal Singh said: “Though it is the prerogative of the party high command, everybody wants to see Amarinder as the next chief minister.”
