Even as Himachal Pradesh has the third highest number of rural salaried government job households, over 53% such households in the state have a monthly income less than Rs 5,000.
Lakshadweep has the highest number of salaried government job households at 41%, followed by Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 28% and Himachal Pradesh at 23%.
The recently released Socio-Economic and Caste Census-2011 (SECC) points out that Himachal has 14.25 lakh households of which 12.62 lakh households are in rural areas. Of these 6.74 lakh households make less than `5,000 each month, despite the fact that 2.91 lakh rural households have salaried government jobs.
Around 2.80 lakh (22%) households have a monthly income between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000, while around 3 lakh (24.36%) households have a monthly income over `10,000.
Of the total rural households, 17,881 (1.42%) have salaried jobs in public sector, while 1.18 households (9.43%) have salaried jobs in private sector.
As many as 9.9 lakh households (78.49%) have only mobile phones, while 12,300 have no phone facility.

Of the 77,522 Scheduled Tribe (ST) households in the state, 18,390 (23%) have salaried government jobs, yet over 45,000 (58%) tribal households make less than 5,000 per month. Around 60,000 ST households have mobile phones, while 10,291 households are without any phone facility.
Among the Scheduled Castes (SC) population, 54,848 (18.13%) households have salaried government jobs of the total 3.02 lakh SC households in the state. Around 2 lakh households have less than Rs 5,000 as monthly income, over 53,000 households earn Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 monthly and only 16% households make over Rs 10,000 per month.
Around 2.42 lakh such households (79.86%) have mobile phones, while 17,630 own both mobile and landline phones. Only 13% SC households in state are without any phone facility.
The Census also revealed that 28,795 landless households (9.52%) were deriving major part of their income from manual labour.
The country has 17.91 crore rural households of which 89.56 lakh (5%) households have salaried government jobs. Of the total households, 74.49% (13.34 crore) have the monthly income of the highest earning household member less than `5,000.
