A property dealer from Panchkula was allegedly thrashed by seven to eight men during his five-year-old son’s birthday party at a hotel in Zirakpur on Friday.

Police said the victim, 34-year-old Rakesh Kumar, told them that the attackers were bookies and were calling him since morning over a payment issue.

They added that Rakesh was celebrating his son Kunal Garg’s birthday at Ramada Plaza, on Chandigarh-Ambala Road, when a group of men entered the premises and started arguing with the victim.

Rakesh, who has suffered injuries on the head and fractured his left arm, said, “The men who attacked me are bookies and live in a flat in Sector 20, Panchkula. They were calling me since morning to come and meet them outside Paras Downtown Square Mall. However, I denied as I was busy preparing for the party.”

Police have booked two residents of Abohar, identified as Vipul Ahuja and Goga, and seven to eight unidentified men.

“The matter escalated after I abused the men for spoiling my son’s party. Soon, they called others who started beating me up and a couple of my family members.”

The investigating officer, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Narinder Kumar, said, “Both the parties got into a heated argument over the phone, following which the men attacked Rakesh by barging into the hotel. A man named Parul started the argument.”

“All the men are in their late 20s and early 30s and will soon be arrested. We have information on their location,” he added.
