According to sources, as many as five air-conditioned buses in the city plying under the Punbus scheme are scheduled to be condemned by the board in a week.

Rashpal Singh Makhu, general manager, Punjab Roadways, Ludhiana depot, said, "The state director transport will be visiting the depot next week and decision for the proposed five air-conditioned buses will be taken during his visit."

"The limit for a regular roadways bus is seven years after it hits the road or covers a distance of 5.25 lakh kilometers, whichever is earlier whereas for an air-conditioned bus, it's either five years or a distance of 5 lakh kilometres," Makhu added.

Harbansh Singh, president, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), said, "It is indeed a welcome move by the state transport department that after making an announcement of introducing new buses last week, they are suitably following up with their decision and identifying all buses which have worn out or are not in a proper shape to continue on roads to be condemned."
