Patiala bids tearful adieu to CM Amrinder’s mother Rajmata
Amid slogans of “Rajmata Amar Rahe” (Long live the Rajmata) and showering of petals from a large crowd, chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh lit the pyre to bid a tearful adieu to his mother, Rajmata Mohinder Kaur, at the Shahi Samadhan — the family’s ancestral cremation ground — on Tuesday. 52-yr-old granny is Uber’s first female driver for a bike taxi in Punjab
A 52-year-old grandmother from Mohali’s Phase 11 is among the 100 bike taxi riders who started operating in Mohali, Kharar and Zirakpur on Tuesday as part of the Punjab government’s ‘Apni Gaddi, Apna Rozgar’ programme. The bike taxis, launched in partnership with Uber, were flagged off by finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal at the Indian School of Business here. Police arrest college student who got girlfriend raped to avoid marriage
A 19-year-old man hatched a conspiracy with his two friends who raped his girlfriend so that he could later use that as an alibi to not marry her, police in Jalandhar said on Monday.
The case came to light when the victim, aged 19 and a classmate of alleged conspirator Harpreet Singh Happy, approached the police. Happy was arrested and a case under sections 376D (gangrape), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 417 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) registered against him and the two alleged rapists, identified as Bindu and Ravi, both aged 20. 28 minor girls eloped in Ferozepur in six months; only 8 have returned
In a district where even adults who marry according to their own choice usually face the family’s ire, a new issue — of minor girls eloping — is emerging as a new worry for parents and the civil society.
Over the past six months, parents of 28 minor girls belonging to rural and urban areas reported that their minor daughter had been ‘taken away’ after being misled. In all cases, the male who eloped has been listed as the accused. Of the cases registered, four girls were allegedly misled by males under the jurisdiction of Sadar, Cantonment and Ghallkhurd police stations. Read more
Three Uber bike taxis challaned in Chandigarh
The State Transport Authority (STA), Chandigarh, on Tuesday challaned three Uber bike taxis at Sector 8 for operating in the city without permit.
The action came the same day as Punjab minister Manpreet Singh Badal launched his government’s flagship ‘Apni Gaddi, Apna Rozgar’ scheme by flagging off 100 bike taxis, which will operate in Mohali and Ludhiana districts. Read more
