The police have booked two employees of the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation (PSWC) after wheat worth Rs 1.21 crore was found missing from a godown of the agency in the border district here.
Sources said Arshdeep Singh, manager, Punjab State Warehousing Corporation, Ferozepur, in a report to the local police informed that lifting of foodgrains by trains in other areas out of state was to be done on March 13, June 8 and June 16 at Makhu, a town in the district.
He further said Balwant Singh, a godown attendant, and Kamal, a junior technician, allegedly embezzled wheat worth Rs 1.21 crore from the godown under their custody.
After registering a report in this connection, the police have launched a manhunt to nab the accused.
Last year too, 2.50 lakh paddy bags worth Rs 10 crore were found missing in four rice mills at Jalalabad during physical verification.
Two of these mills were of politically influential persons.
Earlier, 15,476 bags of paddy worth Rs 46.46 lakh were allegedly siphoned off by Thind Agro situated at Loombriwala village
In April, two cases were registered at Guruharsahai and Makhu in the district for alleged siphoning of wheat worth Rs 7 crore belonging to Markfed.
Paddy worth Rs 5.52 crore was embezzled by the owners of Ganpati Rice Mill at Mudki village when they were asked to deliver rice in lieu of paddy stocked on their premises by Pungrain in 2009-2010.
In 2010-2011, owners of Jawala Rice Mill had also siphoned off paddy worth Rs 5.10 crore and failed to deliver rice in lieu of paddy stocked on their premises.
In December 2010, the district food and supply controller (DFSC), seven officials of the department and mill owners were booked in Ferozepur for alleged embezzlement of paddy worth Rs 7 crore when 1.91 lakh bags paddy allotted to Noor Rice Mill by Pungrain were found missing.
