UGC said the grant was released after it received a letter by the ministry of human resource development, asking it to release the grant for the first quarter.

The information was given during the resumed hearing of a suo motu petition initiated by the court on PU financial crisis.

Punjab government told high court that they had sanctioned Rs 2 crore for the month of April. But it sought more time to respond to demand of increasing the annual grant.

During the hearing, vice chancellor AK Grover demanded that Punjab be asked to release Rs 40 crore and Centre an amount of Rs 60 crore annually at the beginning of a financial year, so that university officials do not have to run around for paying salaries every year.
