Batta said, “17 districts of the state have been declared smoke-free, and now it is our turn to make Ludhiana smoke-free. For this, we are issuing challans to smokers at public places every month.”

District health officer Dr Abnash Kumar said 'No Smoking' boards were also being installed at the public places.

He said consumption of tobacco lead to heart, respiratory and other health problems.

“Also, a warning message should be displayed at tobacco seller's shop. Another board displaying, 'No sale to a person below 18 years' written on it should also be put on display at every shop,” Kumar said.

The civil surgeon also warned that the vendors can't hang packets of tobacco products at their stalls. They should avoid encouraging consumption of tobacco products, he said.
