Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has decided to challan residents against water wastage from Friday but this time they will also send pictures along with challans. The fine will be added to the water bills of users.

NK Verma, Superintending Engineer, HUDA, appealed to residents not only waste water themselves but also not allow neighbours to do the same.

He informed that teams had been formed for surveillance. “Wherever we find wastage of water, the owner will be fined of Rs 5,000. People waste water while washing scooters/cars whereas these could be taken care off with a wet cloth too. Similarly, at construction sites water is lost when they could do with less water,”said Verma.

He said he had instructed junior engineers (JEs) to go in their sectors and take help of councillors/resident welfare associations to keep a check on wastage of water both in the evenings and mornings. There will be 8-9 JEs who will keep check in their designated sectors.

After a challan is issued a resident could go to appellate authority which could reduce the challan. “We have kept a fine of Rs 5,000. Otherwise, people do not bother,”said Verma. He added that no notices will be given this time.

He had also passed instructions to officials keep a check on water leakage. HUDA has also floated a toll-free number 1800-180-3030 for residents to report on water leakage.
