A talk to familiarise students on “good and bad touch” helped a 11-year-old girl, a student of Class 3, reveal to a friend that she was being sexually exploited by her 22-year-old brother.

The victim, who was allegedly by her brother several times in 18 months , is a resident of Kharar in Punjab. She complained to her mother, a domestic help, after she was raped the first time. Believing that the child was hallucinating and was possessed, the mother took her to a tantrik (self-styled godman) for a cure.

The mother later caught her son assaulting the victim and asked him to leave the house. She, however, asked her daughter not to speak about the rape to others.

The matter was reported by the girl’s school to a childline after she told a classmate on July 20 this year that her brother was doing things to her that the teacher had referred to as “bad touch.” The friend had then informed the teachers about it.

A case under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was registered at the Kharar (Sadar) police station.

“The accused has been arrested. He works in a cycle repair shop. The mother of the victim had also admitted that she had once caught her son exploiting the victim. He will be produced before the court on Sunday,” said inspector Baghwant Singh, station house officer Kharar (Sadar).

Victim recounts ordeal in court

In a statement recorded before the magistrate, the victim narrated how her elder brother had assaulted her, even subjecting her to unnatural sex.

The youngest of 11 siblings in a family belonging to Uttar Pradesh, she told the court that her brother worked at a cycle shop in Attawa, Sector 42. He had been living with her and her mother while the other siblings lived elsewhere when he started raping her in the morning before she left for school at 8 am. The mother would leave home at 6 am for work.

After she made the statement the victim’s custody was handed over to the mother.

The family lives in a rented accommodation, their father has deserted them.
