Unauthorised jail meeting: 6 Patiala cops booked for tampering record
Following the recent unauthorised meeting between senior journalist Kanwar Sandhu and Balwant Singh Rajoana, a convict in the Beant Singh assassination case, in the Patiala central jail, the local police have registered a case against six jail officials for tampering with the record.
These are Jagmel Singh, suspended assistant jail superintendent; warders Kewal Singh and Nirbhay Singh; and Mani Singh, Darshan Singh and Jarnail Singh.
The jail department had reported to the police that Sandhu had met Rajoana without any permission and following the scuffle, the jail officials made a forged entry to save their skin. The case has been registered at Tripuri police station here under Sections 166 (public servant disobeying law), 167 (public servant framing an incorrect document with intent to cause injury), 218 (public servant framing incorrect record or writing with intent to save person from punishment), 465 (forgery), 466 (forgery of record of court or of public register), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code besides Section 54 of the Prisons Act.
While sharing the contents of the first information report, a senior police officer said the inquiry report by jail officials said the accused had tried to tamper with the entries in the official entry register. He said they had arranged the meeting of the journalist with Rajoana without putting the entry on record. He said that later they put the entry on the register showing the same time to make the visit official and there was visible tampering with the entries on the register.
The officer said the case was registered on Thursday night and the accused were yet to be arrested. The case has been registered on the recommendation of the prisons department after conducting a detailed inquiry. The unauthorised meeting was captured on the CCTV cameras installed on the jail premises.
Tripuri station house officer Rajesh Chhibber said the police would verify the involvement of others.
Rajoana had manhandled Sandhu, who visited the jail with controversial dismissed cop Gurmeet Singh Pinky. Sandhu was asking Rajoana questions about the allegations levelled by Pinky against him. Later, the prisons department had suspended assistant jail superintendent Jagmel Singh and five others for facilitating the interview.
