With the Punjab Congress spokesman and former MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira set to join the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress will lose its firebrand leader who previously represented the Bholath assembly constituency.
Punjab Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener Sucha Singh Chhotepur had recently confirmed that Khaira would formally join the party soon.
Khaira is the only senior leader of the Congress in the Bholath constituency, who could take on present MLA and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bibi Jagir Kaur.
Kapurthala is known for a strong Congress base since three leaders — Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjit, Sultanpur Lodhi MLA Navtej Singh Cheema and ex-Bholath MLA Khaira — belonged to the district. Sources said the Congress does not have any substitute of Khaira from the Bholath constituency.
Khaira did not participate in party campaigns during the recently held nagar panchayat elections at Nadala in which the SAD-BJP combine made a clean sweep by winning eight out of 11 seats in the civic body.
