A 23-year-old youth from Hisar died of suspected drug overdose at a hotel in Nayagaon on Friday night. This is sixth fatality in similar cases in Mohali in the past two months.
Seven people, including the alleged woman drug supplier and victim Deepinder Malik’s friend Akash, have been booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Deepinder was preparing for an English language test to go abroad and was staying on rent with his uncle Harpal Singh in Sector 19, Chandigarh. He had gone out with Akash, who is from Rajpura, on Friday night.
Akash told police that they procured injections of habit-forming drugs from Bala — a history-sheeter — for Rs 3,000 that Deepinder got wire transferred from a friend.
The duo injected the drugs in Sector 22 and went to Chandigarh Club, but Deepinder’s health deteriorated, he said. The two checked into Arya Hotel in Nayagaon, hoping that Deepinder’s condition would improve after some rest, but soon froth started coming out of his mouth. Deepinder was rushed to Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16, where he was declared brought dead.
“The postmortem has been conducted and the victim’s viscera sample has been sent for further examination,” said Amroz Singh, deputy superintendent of police (DSP, city), Mohali.
Friend held, ‘Drug queen’ among accused
On the statement of victim’s uncle, police booked Bala, Akash and five others, who have not been named. A Nepalese man has also been detained for questioning. The case has been registered under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code, said inspector Bagwant Singh, Nayagaon station house officer, adding that Akash was arrested after his medical examination.
The detained man is the one who arranged other drugs and the hotel room for the duo, said police, who have also impounded an old-model Mercedes car used by the victim.
Bala, who is facing 24 cases of different nature, has been convicted twice. A resident of Sector 38, she is known as “drug queen” being one of the biggest drug suppliers in the city. She was sentenced to 10 years jail for possessing smack and was awarded a year’s jail in another drug case.
