Independence and being free means to be able to do what your heart says and follow your passion. On the 71st year of independence, celebrities voice their opinion on what freedom means to them and how they would like to see a more human society, given today’s scenario.

Being truly independent is about following your heart and doing things that you want to do for the betterment of yourself and people around you. On the 71st year of Independence, I feel freedom is still a mirage in some aspects of our country. I wish there was more creative liberty and freedom of speech, especially as an artiste. This is something that has been an issue for several years and it is not new. We see everyone’s sentiments being hurt easily over trivial issues. We instead need to be more sensitive towards humanity and value human life more.

I am proud of the fact that we Indians with varied cultures welcome each other with utmost respect and honour. You will not find people of different castes and religions living together in harmony anywhere else as you will in India. The changes I would like to bring are infrastructure changes for the betterment of the country, hygiene and safety especially for women. Being truly Indian means taking a flight to achieve your dreams but having our culture our principles and our values as the wind beneath our wings no matter where we go.

I am proud of the fact that people are finally taking steps towards protecting the environment and trees and wildlife. Truly independence means to fight for nothing, to be able to enjoy life rather than struggling everyday.

Though we became an independent nation 71 years ago, we are still regressive in many ways. We speak about women empowerment and gender equality but there are girls being killed even before they see the light of day. There are rapes, child trafficking and domestic violence happening around us. As a country, because of these heinous crimes, we seem regressive to the outside world. It's only when we break the shackles which suppress our rights to live and rise above them all and give equal importance and rights to both will we emerge an independent nation in its true sense. Having said that, I am truly proud of our defence services - the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. I salute their service and integrity towards the nation. I believe in the law and our judicial system but there are certain amendments which really need to be made and implemented when it comes to serving justice to the people.

I am proud that our country is becoming digital. A lot of important work happens online these days, be it financial transactions or education and recruitment processes, adding a global touch to India. What I would like to see is this advancement reach each and every person. To be able to do what you really like, and be what you really want to, maintaining the peace with one another.
