MUMBAI: Spear headed by recently crowned continental 6-red champion Pankaj Advani, India defeated Qatar 3-0 to enter the knockout stage of the Asian Team Snooker Championship being held in Abu Dhabi.

Advani opened with a 70-16 win over Qatar’s Ahmed Saif 70-16 before Manan Chandra defeated Mohsin Bukshaisha 70-45. In the doubles contest, Advani and Chandra combined forces outclass Saif and Ali Alobaidly 88-11.

Earlier, India were equally impressive in dispatching Sri Lanka by a similar margin, winning the two singles matches 61-12 and 79-1 before sewing up the tie with a facile 86-1 win in the doubles match.

Thailand, India’s main rival in the group, also won against Qatar (3-2) and Lanka (3-0). ‘

TINTU HOPES TO FINISH IN UNDER TWO MINUTES’

NEW DELHI: Reigning Asian champion in 800 metres, Tintu Luka (in pic) hopes to get into peak form for the Rio Olympics as she prepares to run in a couple of tough races in Europe in under two minutes.

The legendary PT Usha, who is Luka’s coach, said that her protege had started the season well with a 2.01second race compared to her usual time of 2.03.

The 27-year-old athlete from Kannaur, Kerala will be participating in two international competitions in London and Prague, on May 28 and June 6 respectively.

SHOOTERS CONTINUES DISAPPOINTING SHOW

MUNICH: Continuing their poor show at the ongoing shooting World Cup, India’s best Rio Olympics hopes of Jitu Rai, Gurpreet Singh, Prakash Nanjappa failed to impress in 10 metres air pistol, while the women – Anjum Moudgil and Lajja Gauswami – missed out on making the final round of rifle 3 positions here on Tuesday.

Jitu, who finished eighth in his qualification relay, eventually ended in 22nd place with a score of 579 while Gurpreet shot 578 to finish in 32nd spot at Munich’s Olympic Shooting Centre.

Omkar Singh, another Indian in the fray, shot 574 to finish 52nd. Prakash, who shot in the minimum qualification score (MQS) section, shot a score of 576.

Anjum and Lajja shot identical scores of 582 in their qualification round to finish on 15th and 17th spots respectively.
