The trouble began when referee Octavio da Silva Catanhede Jordan, 20, sent off Josenir dos Santos Abreu, 30, during a match in the Pius XII stadium, Maranhao, a few days back.
According to news reports the player refused to leave the field and began insulting the referee, who was said to be carrying a knife and stabbed him.
Enraged spectators then ran on to the pitch to exact revenge on the referee. According to reports he was tied up and stoned to death, before being quartered and then decapitated in horrifically violent scenes. It is also alleged his head was then impaled on a stake which was planted in the middle of the pitch. Josenir dos Santos Abreu was taken to hospital but died of his injuries.
A 27-year-old is said to have been arrested and police are searching for two more suspects.
