Tsonga, 27, hadn't played since retiring from the second round at Wimbledon with a left knee injury which also ruled him out of the US Open.

But he shrugged off any rustiness with a 6-3, 6-4 win over fellow Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin to make the Metz quarter-finals.

Tsonga will next face Germany's Tobias Kamke, who rallied past Hungarian qualifier Marton Fucsovics 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 38 minutes.
