The Jawahar Tunnel and Banihal fall to the south of Kashmir and connect it to Jammu division which further connects the region to the rest of the country. The Mughal road in South Kashmir and the Leh-Kargil road are already blocked due to heavy snow.

The Railways conducted two trial runs of the service on the Srinagar-Banihal stretch on Saturday and then another trial run on Sunday morning before the actual service started, he added.

Officials said early in the morning an avalanche hit south Kashmir’s Qazigund region, which connects the Valley to Jammu and ultimately north India. No loss of life was reported in the incident.
