IMD alerts: 12 states to get rainfall till December 6 due to cyclone Jawad

According to the latest bulletin by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone has weakened into a deep depression and will move north-northwestwards towards Odisha's Puri, where it will make landfall around Sunday noon.

Cyclone Jawad weakened into deep depression, lies 330km of Odisha’s Puri: IMD

The India Meteorological Department forecasted earlier in the day that cyclone Jawad will gradually weaken into a deep depression in the next 12 hours before moving north-northwestwards to reach Odisha’s Puri on Sunday noon.

Cyclone Jawad: Odisha, north Andhra Pradesh districts to receive heavy rainfall

Cyclone Jawad latest: The IMD said that the cyclonic storm over westcentral Bay of Bengal was about 250 km southeast of Vishakhapatnam, 430 km south-southwest of Puri and 510 km south-southwest of Paradip late Friday night.

On Saturday, heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely over north coastal Andhra Pradesh.(IMD)

Cabinet secretary asks states to ensure nocasualties take place as Jawad nears

Reviewing the preparedness of states, central ministries and other agencies to deal with the impending cyclonic storm in a meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), Gauba stressed on the restoration of essential services in the shortest possible time with minimum disruption and uninterrupted functioning of Covid-19 hospitals.

Ahead of Cyclone Jawad, Odisha preps for evacuation, shuts schools

If Cyclone Jawad makes landfall in Puri, this would be the second cyclone in the last two and half years to strike the coastal district. On May 3, 2019 very severe cyclonic storm Fani hit Puri with wind speed of 200 kilometres per hour affecting about 16.5 million people in Puri, Khorda and Cuttack districts that left 64 dead.

Cyclone Jawad’s storm surge impact to be amplified by spring tide

Jawad is likely to move north-westwards, intensify further and reach west-central Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coasts by Saturday morning. Thereafter it is likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move along Odisha coast reaching near Puri around Sunday noon.

Trains cancelled and schools shut in Andhra ahead of cyclone Jawad’s landfall

The deep depression over Bay of Bengal intensified into cyclone Jawad at 11.30am on Friday, and is expected to move northwestwards and reach the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha by Saturday morning. It will then change route to make landfall near Odisha’s Puri on Sunday noon.

The IMD said that cyclone Jawad is expected to reach a maximum sustained windspeed of 80-90kmph gusting to 100kmph.
