Mumbai NIA court: 2 sent to 5-yr jail for conspiring to revive Khalistan movement

Harpal Singh, alias Raju, and Gurjeet Singh Nijjar were convicted under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, besides relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Maharashtra Police Act. During the trial, both pleaded guilty before special judge for National Investigation Agency (NIA) AM Patil and requested that they be given a minimum sentence as they were sole earning members of their families.

A special NIA court on Wednesday sentenced two men to five years’ imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to the charge of trying to revive the Khalistan movement. (HT File)

Toronto meet underlines Amritpal’s links with Pak

Pakistan's consul general in Toronto met with Khalistani figures, including aides to fugitive Amritpal Singh, in a meeting that took place close to Toronto in summer 2020. The meeting was ostensibly to present a memorandum about the killing of Sikhs in Peshawar, but also included leaders of the Khalistan movement in Canada. This is part of Pakistan's wider effort to meet with such elements and organise jathas or pilgrimages to Pakistan.
