Mohali trash hill: HC seeks affidavits from MC chief, local bodies secy

The Punjab and Haryana high court has ordered Mohali municipal corporation to provide personal affidavits on waste disposal measures in the city. The court also directed the corporation to address issues raised by the Punjab Pollution Control Board and ensure no financial troubles in taking remedial measures. The court expressed concern over the corporation's lack of compliance and indolence in waste management. The corporation has been given suggestions for remedial measures at the Phase-8B dumping site.

The court also directed the MC chief that the issues raised by Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) member secretary in his report, be dealt with “most promptly” within 45 days. (HT File)

IIT Madras & Tel Aviv researchers develop aerogel adsorbent to remove pollutants

According to IIT Madras, this graphene-modified silica aerogel removes over 76 per cent of trace pollutants (PPM level) in continuous flow conditions.

The research team developed a silica aerogel modified with graphene. They employed a method called 'supercritical fluid deposition' to prepare these modified aerogels and studied their effectiveness.

MCG to streamline solid waste management project

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) plans to install CCTV cameras at all 35 secondary waste points in the city to ensure timely collection of waste. The move comes after complaints from residents regarding poor waste management and irregular garbage collection. The MCG commissioner has directed officials to expedite the work and ensure that all agencies meet their set targets within a stipulated timeframe. The CCTV cameras will be installed after tenders are floated later this month and the entire system will be linked with the integrated command and control centre (I-CCC) within three months.

Bada Mangal in Lucknow: Organisers for green, eco-friendly ‘bhandaras’ this year

Lucknow Municipal Corporation has partnered with civil society organisations to promote clean and green community feasts during Bada Mangal. The initiative aims to limit waste like plastic and thermocol plates, polythene bags, and water bottles generated after the community feast. Lucknow-based NGO Mangalman has roped in 100 such organisations that are planning to host eco-friendly community feasts across Lucknow on the first Badamangal. The NGO has also invited people to register on its website for free to avail tips and help on waste disposal.

Biomedical waste a concern amid soaring Covid-19 cases

Concerns over the mixing of contaminated waste and general municipal waste, as well as the lack of safety equipment among sanitation workers continue to remain a key concern among unions and organisations working with informal waste pickers.
