35-year-old Gemma Kirk-Bonner spotted the cigarette while feeding her three-year-old son, reports The Mirror. This incident happened when she bought a meal from a McDonald's branch in Barrow-in-Furness, a town in England. Kirk-Bonner also claimed that the branch didn't respond after she reported the incident to them.

“I gave my three-year-old his [McDonald’s meal]without looking. Then I put my one-year-old in his high chair, and I was feeding him by hand. I was picking the fish fingers up for him. That’s when I noticed the ash and the cigarette in the box. It was disgusting. I was absolutely fuming. If I’d given the box to my three-year-old, he would have tried to eat it. He wouldn’t have known it was different,” she told The Mirror.

“It has put me off. It’s made me think twice about going to McDonald's. I normally take my sons on Friday, but I won't be doing it this time, that’s for sure. I’m in the process of complaining to McDonald's head office,” she added.

She also took to Facebook and wrote, “Forget the toy, now comes with cigarette end as ash for extra taste. Phoned up to make a complaint but rudely spoke to then she put the phone down on me!” A picture shows a cigarette butt amid a few French fry pieces at the bottom of a packet.

How did McDonald’s respond?

“Food safety is of the utmost importance to us, and we place great emphasis on quality control and providing the highest standard to our customers of our Barrow-in-Furness restaurant. We would encourage the customer to contact customer services so that we can properly investigate and help them find a resolution,” a spokesperson for McDonald's told The Mirror.
