A little late in the day, but any New Year resolutions?
I want to stop watching news channels. I’d also like to get some brains.. and stop smoking. You had your first lead role in 2008 in Krazzy 4.. but the movie didn’t do well. It may have worked better if we had all been crazier. There were too many restrictions but still everyone made money.. from the distributors and Rakeshji (Roshan) to Ram Sampat.

(Laughs) Everyone’s happy. Maybe the fact that you played a mute character in the film didn’t work. I am fascinated by silent roles because you can do so much more. I’d love to launch a Krazzy 4 More with me as a Mr Beanish type of character. I don’t think Rakeshji would allow a sequel though.

Your character in Hello received flak.. Atul Agnihotri has to pay me back for my roles in both his movies. Yes, I was disappointed with the way the role shaped up. I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.

You’ve been on the scene for 15 years.. shouldn’t you be more savvy about your roles?
I know.. but in these times of recession, it’s about which project chooses you. And I have to think of my family and kitchen. I still try to take up projects in which I can have fun.

What are your plans for 2009?
Mumbai Chakachak, Khallbali and Chatur Singh Two are lined up. Fortunately they are all healthy roles.. not like Hello. I may also do a Malayalam film. Then I’m judging Hello Kaun Pehchaan Kaun on Star One.

How’s that going?
I’m learning so many things. I’m actually getting trained by the actors. One guy mimicked Akshaye Khanna.. and I’ve never seen a better imitation. I told him I’d like to be coached by him, but he thought I was joking. I meant it.

Whom do you like mimicking the most?
(Instantly) Sachin Tendulkar. I think his attitude and voice make mimicking him very funny. (Guarded) Not that he’s funny in any way.

What would you say if you met him?
I’d say, (mimics Sachin) “Haila Sachin! What’s happening dude?” It’ll be a dream come true. I’m sure he has a great sense of humour.. he’s survived in the cricket team for so long!

Why is there a sudden spurt of comedy on television? Have we become funnier?
I think there’s too much breaking news and too much rona dhona in the daily soaps. It’s good if there’s something to make you laugh. But what’s not funny is the fact that children are also doing stand-up acts. I have a feeling we’ll see them reading the news soon too.

Don’t you feel like breaking out and doing something different?
Sometimes I do feel slotted.. but I always say that Sachin Tendulkar can play well at any number, but he is the best as an opener. I’m best at comedy, so I don’t mind doing it.. as long as I can make people laugh.

Your anchor act at the recent Gold Awards was very inspired by the Shah Rukh Khan-Saif Ali Khan act. I actually think SRK and Saif have been inspired by Ali (Asgar) and me.

Not that we mind being compared with them. But we need to decide who’s SRK and who’s Saif between Ali and me! Jokes apart, we had a blast anchoring that show.. we were in front of our own industry.. everyone was such a sport.

Will we ever see someone mimicking Suresh Menon?
(Laughs) I already have.. on Hello Kaun.. He came in as Dabboo from Krazzy 4 but had a Gujarati accent. I couldn’t laugh too much because.. umm.. I’m married to a Gujarati.
