US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday, August 12, that the US military would target drug cartels using tactics similar to those employed against terrorist organisations such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda. Speaking during a jungle operations training course in Panama, Hegseth said groups involved in drug trafficking or threatening Americans and US partners could become military targets. He said the campaign would cover the drug-trafficking network stretching from cocaine routes in Latin America to fentanyl trafficking and drug markets in Mexico. Hegseth said the operations would be coordinated by US Southern Command and US Northern Command, describing the effort as a networked campaign designed to confront organised drug-trafficking groups.
