The Czechs are eyeing speedy modernisation of army, away from Soviet-era equipment. The Czech Republic split from Slovakia in 1993 & joined NATO military alliance in 1999. The Czech Republic submitted a letter of request to the U.S for procurement of F-35 jets. Handing over the letter a prerequisite for further negotiations for the American side.
