India became the sixth country in the world to operate a nuclear-powered submarine after the induction of the INS 'Chakra' into the Navy on Wednesday. Originally named the K-152 Nerpa, the Russian-built INS 'Chakra' is classified as an 'Akula II' attack submarine and weighs over 8,000 tonnes. It is powered by a nuclear reactor that gives it greater power and endurance. However, it does not carry nuclear weapons.
