Over 3,000 families affected by floods in West Bengal

The much awaited monsoon has hit the eastern parts of India; bringing along with it the threats of a devastating flood. More than 3,000 families have been affected by inundation of several villages of Paschimi Medinipur district of West Bengal, triggered by heavy rainfall and release of water from the dams and barrages across of River Damodar on Monday. The gushing waters have submerged houses, villages and destroyed vast stretches of agricultural lands, forcing thousands of families homeless and run for cover. The state government after monitoring the situation, has instructed all district officials to coordinate relief work on a war footing but it is yet to reach the needy.
