Powerful Typhoon Champi brought high waves and strong winds to Japan's Ishigaki Island as it approached the southwestern Okinawa region. The storm packed wind gusts of up to 216 km/h, prompting hotel guests to remain indoors for safety. Champi also disrupted travel, with Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways cancelling dozens of flights serving Ishigaki, Miyako Island and Naha. Forecasters expected the typhoon to pass over Yonaguni, Japan's westernmost inhabited island, while brushing past the northeastern tip of Taiwan. Residents and travellers were urged to follow official weather updates and safety instructions as the powerful storm moved closer.
