Twitter loses legal shield in India; UP cops file case in Loni incident

Twitter India has lost legal protection from prosecution over posts of users. Sources in the government confirmed that Twitter is no longer protected from penal action under Section 79 as it did not comply with new IT Act provisions. Earlier this month, the government had given one last chance to Twitter to comply with the new IT rules, which came into effect on May 26, 2021. Government had also issued a stern warning that failure to adhere to the norms will lead to the platform losing exemption from liability under the IT Act.
