Colombian President Gustavo Petro, hosting the 2025 EU–CELAC Summit in Santa Marta, called for deeper integration across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe—even as consensus rules in CELAC limit bolder action. Petro urged both regions to serve as a beacon of democracy, denounced violence in Gaza and missile strikes in the Caribbean, and said true global dialogue is possible through unity in diversity and mutual respect. He drew on the tragedy of extrajudicial killings in his own region to warn against the advance of “barbarism” and called for the summit to produce concrete cooperation and inspire hope for “global democracy and a free humanity.”
