Champion Muguruza knocked out in Wimbledon Round 2, Wawrinka exits too
Garbine Muguruza’s Wimbledon title defence was hijacked by Alison van Uytvanck as the little-known Belgian produced a fearless brand of hard-hitting tennis to topple the champion with a 5-7 6-2 6-1 victory in the second round on Thursday. The defeat means that five of the top six women’s seeds have now exited the tournament in four days, with top seed Simona Halep the only player in that list to make the third round. There were big upsets in the men’s field too, with last year’s runner-up Marin Cilic losing 3-6 1-6 6-4 7-6(3) 7-5 to Argentine Guido Pella, ranked 82. Stan Wawrinka lost 7-6(7) 6-3 7-6(6) against Italian journeyman Thomas Fabbiano. (Video: SNTV).
