Girls in South Sudan learn peace and self-worth through exercise
A girls-only sports club is helping to foster team spirit and hopes to promote peace in a country divided by conflict. The girls are being taught how to deal with trauma through exercise. South Sudan has been grappling with a civil war for 4 years. Fighting has often been along ethnic lines and 3 million people have been displaced. The Spring for Peace organization is hoping to bring some positivity these young women’s lives. The club wants them to know the importance of self-worth and education. The club is supported by the United Nations. Students are taught about teamwork, cooperation and tolerance. It’s hoped that the young women will take these skills back to their communities.
