Quake Hits Pakistan: 20 dead, hundreds injured in sleep as roofs, walls collapse

At least 20 people were killed after a massive earthquake hit Pakistan on Thursday. Officials said the earthquake of 5.7 magnitude hit southern Pakistan in the early hours. Officials added that many of the victims died when roofs & walls collapsed. According to a senior provincial govt official, a woman & six kids were among the 20 dead. Provincial interior minister Mir Zia Ullah Langau said that rescue efforts were underway. Balochistan's provincial disaster management authority informed that the death toll may rise. The worst-affected area was the remote mountainous city of Harnai in Balochistan. Lack of paved roads, electricity, cell phone coverage have hampered rescue efforts in the area. The earthquake was also felt in Balochistan's provincial capital Quetta. As per the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake struck around 3am at a depth of about 20 kms.
